Chantilly lies about 1.1 road miles from our office, reached by East 7th Street, Bascom Street and Chesterfield Avenue. It was platted in 1913 on part of a former dairy farm, between Elizabeth and Plaza-Midwood, and Independence Boulevard now cuts through it, leaving the Chantilly community to the south and Commonwealth-Morningside to the north.
A 2020 survey for the State Historic Preservation Office describes the part of Chantilly south of Independence Boulevard as more than 650 modest one- and two-story brick cottages built in the 1930s and 1940s, with the D. L. Phillips Company building over 225 of the houses. Teardowns, remodelings and additions are changing parts of it: in Census Tract 11, around Chantilly's center, about 26 percent of housing units date to the 1940s and about 44 percent to the 2010s. We ask the age of the door and opener before we start.
Chantilly is not one of the City of Charlotte's eight local historic districts. North Carolina G.S. 160D-702(b) also bars city and county zoning rules about the styling of doors, garage doors included, on houses outside historic districts and a few other exceptions, though private covenants still apply.

The crew leaves the office on North Laurel Avenue and East 7th Street, then works along the parallel avenues. Shenandoah and Chesterfield avenues hold the most intact 1940s brick houses, Wyanoke Avenue leads to Chantilly Park, and Veterans Park and Briar Creek Greenway are the usual reference points. Across Independence Boulevard the Commonwealth side is a separate set of blocks, so we confirm the street address before we leave.
